Batman, a dark and mysterious superhero whose adventures take place in the fictional American city of Gotham, was first created by artist Bob Kane and author Bill Finger. Kane initially called Finger with the idea of a new character called ‘Batman’. Kane introduced this character to Finger as having red tights, boots, a mask, and two stiff bat wings. In order to give this new character a more mysterious appearance, Finger suggested that the red tights be removed and the wings be altered into a cape. Batman first appeared in the form of a comic in Detective Comics #27 in May of 1939. After a quick growth in popularity, Batman received its own self-titled comic book in 1940. By the early 1960s, sales of the comic had dramatically decreased. The comic’s popularity had decreased so much that DC had plans to kill Batman off entirely. Editor Julius Schwartz was assigned to give Batman a completely new and contemporary look. Among the items that were revamped were: the Bat-mobile, Batman’s costume, and the bat-insignia. Many of the comic’s first villains were killed off, and even Alfred, Batman’s butler was killed off for a short period until he was brought back due to fan response. Since then, various authors have contributed many additions to the storyline of Batman, most notably in the forms of comics and films. Recent film contributions have included: Batman Returns (1992), Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and “Batman 3″, which is scheduled to be released in 2011.
